Boxwood Cottage Garden – Update Summer 2023

2023 – The Year So Far

It has been a busy year in the garden at Boxwood Cottage. The first full year with the greenhouse and the addition of some new raised beds has seen some very good results and some puzzling failures.

The dahlia bed has produced a continuous supply of beautiful cut flowers. Some of the tubers are getting quite large so when lifted after the first frost they will be split up and stored ready to go into the flower borders next year. New tubers with a slightly more varied colour palette will be purchased in the spring and started off in the greenhouse ready for planting out after the last frost.

Runner beans, tomatoes, peppers (sweet and chilli) and cucumbers have done really well. We have had a plentiful supply of lettuce, onions and garlic. The big disappointment has been the courgettes where we are a long way from having our usual annual glut.

Next year we are going to scale back on some of the ‘leafy’ crops. Purple kale, beet leaf, chard and spinach have been a little too successful. This should leave space for more beetroot, lettuce and spring onions.
